Holstenfleet: how the blue ribbon is reshaping Kiel's city centre

With the Holstenfleet, Kiel has redesigned the former Berliner Platz axis between Holstenstrasse and the marina. Instead of a purely traffic-oriented space, the area is now defined by a long watercourse with seating steps, greenery and places to linger. The project links the pedestrian zone with the harbour and creates a new meeting point in the heart of the city. The city sees this as one building block of its strategy to upgrade the city centre and make water, so characteristic of Kiel, more tangible. Cafes and events enliven the space especially in the summer months.
