GEOMAR: new long-term study on the state of the Baltic Sea launched
Kiel's Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research is investigating in a new project how warming and oxygen depletion are affecting the Baltic Sea.
The GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel has launched a new long-term project on the ecological state of the Baltic Sea. Researchers monitor water temperature, oxygen levels and the development of seabed communities, among other factors. The Baltic is considered a particularly sensitive marginal sea and reacts early to climate change. The findings are intended to support authorities and the fishing industry in long-term decisions. With GEOMAR and Kiel University, Kiel ranks among Europe's leading centres for marine sciences.
